In December 1978 I graduated from the University of Northern Colorado. I was hired by a CPA firm in Colorado Springs, Colorado and my husband and I moved there in January, 1979. I held a Colorado Certified Public Accountant’s license until my retirement on 2011.
A partner for the CPA firm asked me to join a service club called Soroptimist International. A member of that club was a client of the accounting firm and had asked if there were any female accountants that would be interested in joining the organization. I found that Soroptimist was an interesting and dynamic organization. I met and became lifelong friends with a number of the members of the organization.
It was also a very large club at that time. I was on a number of committees, then I was elected as a director and served on the Board of Directors. I was elected Secretary, then Treasurer, 4th Vice President, 3rd Vice President, 1st Vice President, and President in turn.
I attended Regional Conferences, Fall (District) Meetings, SIA Conventions and SI Conventions. I really enjoy the International aspect and work of the organization.
I served as District Director and Regional Treasurer in the Rocky Mountain Region. My husband traveled to many of the Regional Conferences, SIA Conventions and SI Conventions with me before his death in 2014. As a “Mr. Soroptimist” he was very supportive of my involvement in the organization.
In 2017 I decided to return to Kansas City, Missouri where I was born and where my sisters and brother still live. I transferred my membership from SI Colorado Springs to SIKC. I have enjoyed being a member of the Kansas City Club and serving as their Treasurer for the last two years.
It is a pleasure to serve and work in an organization that does so much to help women and girls thrive in our local areas, in our region and around the world. Thank you all for your support of Soroptimist and for the work each of you does every day to advance the economic health of women and girls.

She was a member of the Venture Club, which was sponsored by Soroptimist.

District I Director
I am Leigh Hedgpeth, a 24-year member of Soroptimist of Vandalia, Illinois. I have served as both the District I Secretary and the South Central Region Secretary. I am semi -retired, which means I retired, got bored, and found a part time job with flexible hours in a new field, trucking!
I have been married to my wonderful husband Larry for 35+ years. We have four wonderful children, his, mine and ours. We have eleven grandkids with number twelve due to arrive in March 2020. We also have one great grandson as of August 2019. Over the years Larry has stayed home and taken care of the kids, and now the critters so I can attend Soroptimist functions.
I have had a varied career life. Starting with working in a factory. I then went to college and obtained an Associates Degree in Accounting and Computer Programing. I then worked as a data information processor and receptionist. From there I became the owner and manager of Higgins Dry Cleaning in Vandalia, Illinois. After we sold the business and I got bored I became an executive secretary for the Fayette County Farm Bureau in Vandalia for 13 years before I retired . So I have done a little of this, a little of that and learned a lot.
I have two passions in life besides family, Soroptimist and horses. Get me talking about either and I can talk your ear off.
I am always here to help if you need me. But if you call and I don’t answer please, please leave me a message with your name, club name and phone number, I promise to call you back. My cell reception can be spotty at times, especially when out riding in the woods or at the barn.
